If you are taking AIDS drugs, your doctor will tell you that you can never quit. The AIDS "dissidents" who associate themselves with organizations such as Rethinking AIDS imply that you can just quit, and that you will then be "free" from these drugs.
Who's right?
Answer: They're both wrong.
Why? In summary: the drugs appear to "work" by killing bacteria and fungus infections, but, like many toxic drugs from the past, they also wreck your immune system. So when you stop, your defense against common infections is gone, and in a few months (or weeks, or days) you'll be sick or in the hospital with a chronic infection or pneumonia. There is an alternative: you can stop the drugs, but you need to then pursue an intensive regimen that rebuilds your immune system and meanwhile helps you inhibit or knock out any opportunistic infection.
