Hopes,
dreams, and scams - therapies that probably don't work There are many popular chronic disease therapies that have little, if any, evidence that they do anything, and some may be quite harmful, despite a large and growing chorus of advocates and fans. How is this possible? The promoters and "clinics" that use these therapies do not adequately test people before they are provided with "treatment," and they are not followed up. The result - an inadvertent or purposeful numbers game - is that a large number of people who never had a disease will think they are "cured," while the people who really had serious or deadly illnesses will die. The "treatment" did nothing to either group, but the therapy promoters can claim a large "success" rate! The Quackwatch - Fake Therapy Show Unfortunately for many people seeking effective natural therapies, they are caught in the crossfire between the hucksters and incompetents and the anti-naturopathic website of Stephen Barrett at quackwatch.com. Dr. Barrett, a retired psychiatrist, has made a second career of identifying "quacks" - pseudo-doctors and others promoting "therapies" that either do nothing or are quite harmful. Barrett has been accused of working for the pharmaceutical industry. He ignores the hundreds of thousands of people killed and millions of people harmed each year by the medical system, and focuses on denouncing any naturopathic therapy. Barrett often chooses what are easy targets, such as Hulda Clark, and Stanislaw Burzynski, documenting their lack of standard medical testing to verify efficacy. But included in his targets are some of the foremost naturopathic physicians and researchers (picking on tiny mistakes in their otherwise monumental works), and one comes away with the impression that there are no naturopathic therapies that work. He proposes broad "guidelines" to follow to decide which therapies are fake, focusing especially on "food quacks and vitamin pushers." Notably absent from his list of "quackery" are the nutritional therapies that have documented scientific backing, case studies, and, in some cases, many years of clinical practice. Barrett lambasts the early, preliminary work of Linus Pauling and vitamin C as a cancer therapy, but says nothing about Dr. Hugh Riordan's Center For The Improvement Of Human Functioning International, where Dr. Riordan and his staff have been using high-dose intravenous vitamin C as a successful treatment for cancer for more than a decade, or the work of Dr. Ian Brighthope of Australia, who has been successfully using intravenous vitamin C for AIDS patients. Most notably, Barrett says nothing about Dr. Matthias Rath's successful nutritional therapies for heart disease and cancer and his preliminary work showing its effectiveness in AIDS treatment. Dr. Rath is quite respected in Europe for his natural health therapies. He co-discovered the root cause of heart disease with Linus Pauling in the early 1990s, discovered the role of protease in the disease process, and has published many journal articles and books on these subjects. Remedies that probably do nothing These remedies are probably not harmful and probably do nothing, but doing nothing is harmful when you have a rapidly-progressing deadly disease. The major common flaw in these "therapies" is no pre-testing, no post-testing, and no follow-up, so the claims of effectiveness ring hollow.
Dangerous therapies These remedies are downright dangerous. Even if they could cure any disease, the poisonous nature of the compounds used in them make these as bad or worse than chemotherapy.
