What is HealthyHomes Quality and Mold Remediation Consulting?

It is the application of quality assurance and problem solving - with a special attention to mold prevention and remediation - to existing homes and for new home and home renovation designs, construction, and building materials.

For large commercial buildings, this is the realm of architects and large-scale commercial mold remediators - to review the plans and make sure that the contractor or developer is doing the job accurately.

But for the vast majority of home repairs and renovations, there is only the owner and the contractor/builder, and for a do-it-yourself project it is only the owner and whatever friends and relatives he or she can get to help.

Many homeowners do not have the expertise to be able to figure out that the repair or renovation plans have problems (building code issues, structural problems, wrong materials, not specific enough), or that the contractors'/builders' interpretation of them is going in the wrong direction, until it is too late. People often hire contractors and then ask them to draw up plans, or worse, to work with no plans at all.

This is where I can help. Three examples:

1. Problem solving. You are a homeowner and you have found a problem (such as mold) in your home, or you are just considering a renovation. Who do you call for an evaluation of the problem, or to help you assess the options of materials for your repair or renovation with regard to healthy, non-toxic, mold-free alternatives? Architects, designers, plumbers, electricians, and contractors are not usually trained in these alternatives.

2. Mold Remediation. As a health and home quality consultant, I can help guide you through the mold removal and remediation process. Depending on the level of mold contamination, you may be able to remove the mold yourself, wearing protective clothing and respirator, or hire a contractor who is trained in mold removal.

Additionally, I provide natural therapies for mold-caused illness if you or your family have been adversely affected by the mold. There are safe natural anti-fungus agents that you can take which are safe, as well as supplements for detoxification and enhancement of immunity.

See http://www.cqs.com/homeqa/gotmold for more detailed information.

3. Building Plan Analysis. You are a homeowner, and you have - or an interior designer has - drawn up a basement renovation plan. It calls for an interior wall to be built, at the perimeter of the basement wall. How high should it be? Should it be solid framing from the concrete floor to the ceiling joist? Should the framing be made of wood or steel? What kind of wallboard should be used? What kind of insulation should be used? Should there be a vapor barrier? What kind of sub-flooring and flooring should be used?

The contractors/builders will be unlikely to know the answers to these questions, or rather, they will think they know the answers, but they will likely be the wrong answers for providing you with a long-term solution: a safe, warm, non-toxic basement that is free of mold.

4. Help For Contractors. You are a contractor, and homeowners are relying on you to build safe homes and renovations. You are supposed to be the expert. But you're not familiar with the new information about mold and mold prevention. I can help you navigate this new world.

I'm now writing a booklet for homeowners and contractors - Planning and Building a Safe, Non-Toxic, and Mold-Free Home Renovation.

It will be a list of what materials to use and where to get them, some relevant pictures, ways to find designers and contractors who know what they are doing, and Do's and Don'ts, some of which will surprise everyone.

Here is an excerpt from the booklet: What's Wrong With DriCore - http://www.cqs.com/homeqa/dricore.htm.

You can also contact me now for an inexpensive email or phone consultation if you have a plan that needs review, a problem that needs analysis, or a renovation in the planning stages: http://www.cqs.com/askjon.htm.
