Alternative Technologies for Hazardous Waste Treatment

There are two promising technologies for dealing with hazardous wastes and contaminated soil. This is obviously not an encouragement to produce more waste - we must find ways to eliminate the production of hazardous wastes by changing industrial processes and eliminating the manufacture and use of organochlorines. On the other hand, these technologies provide us with some possible answers for dealing with the enormous amount of toxic wastes now in circulation and the massive contamination of the countryside.

1. Medium-temperature anerobic decomposition. This technique uses thermal means to destroy organochlorines and other volatile organic compounds without the possibility of producing dioxin. This seems to be effective for PCB and other decontamination.

2. Solvated Electron Technology uses electron-activated anhydrous (dry) ammonia to decompose the waste materials. It is the only non-heat technology available for destruction of hazardous wastes, and it is approved by EPA. For informational purposes, I have reprinted the SET press release.
