More Dioxin
Contamination in French Milk MILK FROM 16 FARMS IN THE NORTH OF FRANCE HAS BEEN BANNED FROM SALE FOLLOWING DISCOVERY OF DIOXIN CONTAMINATION Paris, March 31st, 1998. The Veterinary Services have found new cases of cow milk contamination by dioxins in the north of France. To date, at least 16 French farms have been forbidden from selling their milk by the prefecture, the regional State authority. Already two farmers had suffered the same fate at the end of January. "After years of lies, the truth about dioxins is emerging, and France and its farmers are paying a high price" declared Pierre-Emmanuel Neurohr, director of the National Center for Independent Information on Waste (CNIID). The Paris-based NGO is demanding that the polluters pay for the farmers' financial losses. Moreover, meat from these cows could pose a public health threat as well. Waste incineration, a major source of dioxins, is once again under the spotlights. This problem is all the more serious that the solution to the pollution from waste incinerators, according to many political leaders is... new waste incinerators. Even new units, presented as high-tech plants, like the one in Nancy, eastern France, emit up to 30 times EU limits. Dioxin can be transported over long distances. CNIID has launched a national petition in favor of a moratorium on the building of waste incinerators. On April 3rd, Environment minister Dominique Voynet is supposed, at last, to make public the dioxin stack emissions for 72 trash incinerators.
