Last Friday's New York Times published up-to-date findings of the investigation of the DeCoster (Wright County) egg farm now identified as the likely source of the salmonella contamination.
The feed and barns tested positive for salmonella. And the article revealed the real source of salmonella - rodents. The feed for the chickens was contaminated. The feed prepared at Wright County was also sold to Hillandale, the other big source of contaminated eggs.
The published articles about these industrial farms don't paint a pretty picture of them. Millions of chickens in cages, stacked floor to ceiling, in barns that stink so badly of ammonia that they make investigators ill (you've got to ask how the chickens survive it), and obviously infested with rodents, either mice or rats, that helped themselves to the feed bins and left salmonella behind. Animal rights activists, using a hidden camera, recorded gruesome and disgusting conditions in a DeCoster farm in Maine.
There's a big problem with the coverage of this "isolated" salmonella contamination. That is this: it is estimated by FDA and other agencies that somewhere between 1.4 million and 4 million people PER YEAR get salmonella food poisoning, mostly from chickens, eggs, and sometimes raw milk. Of those, only about 40,000 get reported.
Industrial farming methods are the main culprit in salmonella. There is just no way to prevent rodents getting into the food supplies for industrial farms. This is another good reason to avoid industrial farmed animal products, to urge your local grocers to sell and promote cage-free products, and to generally oppose industrial farm methods. The main motive behind industrial farm methods is profit. They undersell farmers who do not use them, and pollute the environment wherever they are. And now we understand the consequences for all of us.
By the way, if you do encounter common food poisoning yourself - severe, debilitating indigestion, nausea, etc. - there is a simple, fast treatment. Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate is best for this), 4000-20,000 mg per day (split into hourly doses, to bowel tolerance, or, if you already have diarrhea, it doesn't matter) to mitigate the toxins from the bacteria and rebuild immunity, and oregano oil, 200 mg carvacrol per day in two doses (most oregano oil preparations are 10% carvacrol, some are 55%). This dosage can be safely doubled for a few days if the symptoms don't subside. Take with non-dairy milk to coat your stomach, and if taking pure oil drops, mix with olive or flaxseed oil and chase with a non-dairy milk to protect your throat and esophagus - it's really strong...Carry vitamin C and oregano oil whenever you travel away from home. You never know when you might need it.
